Perhaps no State House speaker has generated more headlines across the state than Wisconsin Republican Assembly leader Robin Vos. There was Vos, for example, who recently fired Michael Gableman - a former state Supreme Court judge Voss had hired 14 months earlier - after Gableman was too crazy to conduct a ridiculous "audit." defend the 2020 elections.
That same week, the Speaker of the House first faced a Republican challenger and even garnered national attention when Donald Trump offered his support to right-wing challenger Vos. The incumbents have won, but not by much.
Vos admitted a few weeks ago that he received a call from the former Republican president to help reverse the outcome of the 2020 election. NBC News reported this morning:
For now, a report by Politico added that while the committee's subpoena is still alive, "the panel shelved Monday's impeachment deadline after speaking to Vos' lawyers and obtaining copies of the speaker's legal documents. of Wisconsin ".
As these details are worked out, it is particularly interesting to know why Congressional investigators would be interested in speaking with the Wisconsin legislature.
Let's see how we got to this point by reviewing our previous coverage. The Wisconsin Supreme Court issued a deeply disappointing decision in July that drastically reduced the use of ballot boxes, even as voters in Badger State struggled to vote.
This apparently gave Trump a ludicrous idea: shortly after the ruling, the former president argued that if mailboxes couldn't be used in future elections, they shouldn't be used in future elections. And if they were not to be used in 2020, as Republicans believed, many Wisconsin ballots from the last election cycle would now be considered invalid.
At the same time, Trump called Voss and asked him to destroy the 2020 race results, which is still legally impossible. As the chairman of the meeting explained, the former chairman got a little angry.
"It appears that President Robin Vos, a longtime Reno professional who is still trying to protect his wing, will do nothing about the overwhelming decision of the Wisconsin Supreme Court," Trump wrote via his social media platform. "The Democrats sincerely want to thank Robin and all his comrades RINO for freeing them from 'murder'".
It is unclear how many times former President Vos campaigned on the issue - the lawmaker suggested there had been several phone calls - but the Jan.6 committee was eager to find out more.
"The circumstances and details of your conversations with former President Trump regarding the 2020 election are relevant to the election committee's investigation and proposed recommendations," said the representative. Wrote Benny Thompson, Democratic chairman of the bipartisan panel.
Vos doesn't seem interested in collaborating, at least not on the timing that the committee has in mind.
The Wisconsin Republican, whom Trump publicly mocked and condemned, Vos told the Washington Post in late August: "I think Donald Trump has done very well for our country and if he wants to be re-elected, he can ... More."
Remember, the former president not only backed Vos' main opponent, whom he narrowly beaten, but Trump also accused him of covering up corruption. But the Speaker of the House is still publicly approving his impeachment, because that's how Republican policy works in 2022.
